Beaches in the surroundings of Casa das Murtas

You can find many different beaches in the surroundings of the house. You can surf or swim in the sea, tan on the beach or walk on the rocky cliffs, whatever suits you best. We mention 6 in this lists.
Praia Foz do Lizandro (6 km)

A beautiful, spacious beach with a Blue Flag (indication of the quality of the beach seawater). Guarded from June 15 - September. Biggest beach of Mafra.

Very appropriate for families with small children, due to the river Lizandro.  The shallow river results in a lot of fun (the Atlantic ocean can be rough and cold).

There are many good facilities: parkinglot, toilets and showers, surfschools/rentals, cafes, restaurants, bars and prices are fair. Good surfbeach for beginners. In the high season it will be difficult to park after 10 am.

From Casa das Murtas take the road to Quintal and turn left in the direction to Carvoeira. At the T-junction turn right to Ericeira and follow the "Foz do Lizando" sign.

Praia São Julião (7 km)

At the T-junction in Carvoeira turn left. Unspoilt but guarded beach (June 15 - September). You can walk for miles when the tide is low. At low tide also appropriate for children. Parking is available (on the cliff near the cafe or near the beach on the sand if the access road is in good condition. The beach is also popular for surfing but no schools/rentals at the beach.

At the end of the road to the right, you can find a few traditional fishermen' houses with a little chappel and a view to Ericeira.

Praia Ribeira d'Ilhas (9 km)

North of Ericeira you can find the most famous surfers beach in Ericeira. Only for the experienced surfer, what makes it fun to watch. Sometimes (October) there are international competitions. It's part of the 7 WSR (World Surf Reserve) beaches of Ericeira. The beach also has a Blue Flag recognition. Surfschool and rentals available.

You can find a "mirodouro" at the southside of the beach, where you can go down a few flights of steps to the beach, or you can drive your car down to the adjacing parkinglot down by the beach.

Praia do Sul (6 km)

Also named Praia da Baleia genoemd. Has a Blue Flag. Next to Hotel Vila Galé in the centre of Ericeira. In the beginning you will find a natural swimmingpool without waves, formed by the rocks that surround it: ideal for children. It is a quite narrow, guarded beach. It is not the most beautiful beach, but it is clean and ideal when the wind is stong as it is secluded by high cliffs that shelter it from the North-west winds that are dominant in this region.

You can also find Fishermen beach (Praia dos Pescadores), which is sheltered as well, but sometimes not much space is left for your beach towel.

Praia Coxos (12 km)

A smaller beach, situated between rocks. Surfguide call it Ericeiras "Queen Wave and one of the most famous in Portugal". For the experienced surfer (5 stars). Part of the 7 WSR (world surf reserve) beaches of Ericeira.

Pay attention to sea urchins.
